Pros and cons of Smart Maps - New York app for iPhone and iPad
Smart Maps - New York app good for
As a frequent visitor to Manhattan, New York this app has become a trusted tool for both preplanning my visits and more importantly navigating the streets of Manhattan. I have not been able to find a better offline map of New York City anywhere!
The following features are what make this map app my favorite:
- The app does not require or use any data. All the app features are still fully available.
- The recent Retina maps upgrade has completely changed the quality of the maps from good to WOW! This is an important feature that older reviews will not have taken into consideration.
- The ability to track your location in real time on the map is great for showing how close you are to your destination.
- The use of custom drop pins is great for marking points of interest before your trip begins. Once on location you can just start the app and instantly see how close you are to the items that interest you.
This is a great map app and very worthwhile investment, since the product is constantly being updated and getting better!
Essential, necessary, crucial, indispensable. Without it all is different: if you have to go to New York, you have to have it. Very fine, exceptional!
We only went for a few days to Manhattan. I liked how we could figure out our day by the location and proximity of the different spots we wanted to go.
Havent tried the other offline maps for NYC but really quite impressed with this one. Despite not having a data connection, it still managed to show me where I was, with compass orientation! So yeah good stuff...
This, by far, in my opinion, the best offline street map for New York City.

Some bad moments
I bought in order to have access to a map of the city offline, and to have access to the subway stations, fast foods, museums...
Problem is, the map doesnt show the name of all the street in manhattan, which is a huge issue when you search for a particular street and counting on your expensive offline map for that.
Also, not all subway stations are on the database, making it pointless to find your way to the closest station.
And the fast-food? A 2 year old Shake Shack (a hugely popular burger chain with a line usualy extending on the street) is not listed. Sone Mcdo and KFC are not listed neither. So what else is missing? Just not reliable.
So dont buy this, this is a worthless and unreliable app.
This is a fraud. You can search only for street names but no house numbers. Totally useless. / Esse app é uma fraude! Só acha as ruas, não acha os numeros. Inútil!
this app is realy bad ! the zoom doesnt work well - sometimes its importend to get MUCH closer - and you can not typ house numbers in it - so, try to find a place in new york witout this function ?! - i erased it instantly from my iphone - crap
... is quite a drawback! How can I find an adress without this function?
Really need something that is interactive. You cant even select which legend items you want shown on the map and even the ones that appear to be "pre-selected" for you are just a mark on the page. Really dont need to know every school or place of worship in Manhattan is but knowing where my hotel is located might be nice?!!
Buy something else.
The Map is definitely of high quality, but search function is next to useless. If you are not looking for "famous attraction", forget about finding it in this app. Seriously, you cant even search an address, it will just give you a random spot on the street and YOU have to move it to where you think the actual location of where you are trying to locate.
